Oregon
Read MoreThe hike to get to this location still hangs in my mind. We left out hotel around 5am to head to the Eagle Creek Trailhead. Armed with a few printouts from the Internet and GPS coordinates, we started our journey. The first turn we made...wrong. The second...wrong....but we eventually got on the right path. The hike took about two hours. We almost gave up at one point but, after a little temper tantrum by one of our group (well...actually , it was me) , we found the little hidden path down to the creek. From there it was just a matter of listening to the falling water and following the sound. This was pretty much the first scene we were greeted with....and we had the place to ourselves all morning. I'd like to do the hike again, but the fires from last fall we really taken a toll on this area. So, I guess it will have to live in my memory for at least a couple of years

Seal Rock Sunset
I read an article a few months back about photographing the Oregon Coast, and I was surprised when it recommended the winter months as the best time. The days can be gray and cold, with almost constant rain, but when the storms passes, the result can be amazing. This was one of those times.. Mid February...It had been raining and cold all day, and the evening forecast called for much of the same....but a little break in the clouds just above the horizon held some promise. The sun began to set, the light began to change....and just minutes after the sun completely disappeared, the sky exploded into these amazing colors. It was like watching a scene being painted by the hand of God Himself.....and I felt incredibly blessed to have been able to have seen it.

Mossy Grotto Falls
Mossy Grotto Falls - deep in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. If you're looking for a serious hike with an amazing reward at the end, this is it. You'll do about a mile of uphill climbing, through a couple of clearings....then a steep downhill over loose rocks and gravel and poison oak. Once you reach the creek, you'll hear the amazing sound of falling water in the distance. Step around a huge house-sized boulder and you will be greeted with this scene. Nature at her finest.

Under Latourelle Falls
The incredible Latourell Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. Of all the waterfalls along the Gorge, this one is perhaps the easiest to access. You can see it from the parking area and its just about a 5 minute walk to get to this spot. But it is an incredible sight to see. Water flows over basalt cliffs and falls 250 feet into a tiny pool at the bottom. If you look close, you can see a person approaching the bottom of the falls. That would be me. I had actually planned to stand on that rock in front of the base of the falls......but its a bit more daunting when you are actually there.....the force of the falling water makes it tough to get close....and you go from zero to soaked in about 8 seconds.....but it is completely amazing just to stand there and watch nature show off.

Punchbowl Falls from Above
A top-down view of Punchbowl Falls/ Eagle Creek Trail in the Columbia River Gorge. Its about a 4.2+ mile round trip hike to this point and, for some of it, you are walking on ledges that engineers blasted from sheer basalt cliffs. So there's a couple of "oh-crap" moments when you need to let go of the metal rope so that someone can pass you....but those are few and far between. Other than that, it's an amazing hike.....I am not sure what state its in after last weeks fire, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing it again one day. This was shot with a Sony a7RII and Zeiss 16-35mm lens.....0.7 sec exposure to blur out the falls a bit.
