Faroe Islands

This was our last day on the Faroe Islands. It was cold, rainy, cold, and rainy. But it didn't slow us down....and we were rewarded with scenes like this. This church is called Saksunar Kirkja on the island of Streymoy

The village of Viðareiði
A little too much coffee, and a little too much thinking.....and I am still up at 4:30am. Maybe I should just brew another cup and get my day going early. Luckily, I have a gazillion photos in queue. This is the village of Viðareiði on the island of Viðoy.......the Faroe Islands, of course. The pronunciation is something like Viyaraya. It's another one of those little postcard scenes. The Faroe Islands has lots of those.

The Cliffs of Gasadalur
The Cliffs of Gásadalur - This is probably the most photographed scene on the Faroe Islands, and it was our first stop after arriving. You have to climb down this really steep, wet stone staircase to get here. There is a handrail.....well......sort of......more like a metal pipe than somebody bolted into the cliffside. And then there is some weird looking ski lift thing, that we figured out was for moving sheep up and down. It's windy and cold as heck.....but what an amazing scene once you get there.

Seaside of the Faroe Islands
One of the more remote areas of the Faroe Islands. We actually found the backbone of a whale that had washed up on the shore just a few feet from where I took this. You never know what will turn up in such an amazing place.

Land of all Seasons
i remember this day well. The weather went from cold and wet to colder and wetter, then back to cold and wet again. Nicklas, being from Sweden, was pretty much unfazed by any of it. But the Jersey boy wasn’t quite as adventurous……and I spent a lot of time slapping my hands against the car door to try and get some feeling back. But, even with the rough weather, its easy to see why Nat Geo picks this place as a Top Travel Destination every year.

The Edge of the Sea
Picture the scene…..a Swedish guy (who is a Jersey boy at heart) and me driving a tiny rental through the Faroe Islands. We can’t speak the language…..we can’t really read the signs and we had questions like “How do we get those sheep to move”?… and “Can that bridge support a car”? and a lot of “What did I just step in”?. But the trip was completely awesome and I can’t wait to go back. I found this picture last night in a folder that I had misplaced. It was our first stop after arriving, and it is one of the most photographed scenes in the country. The big circles at the top are where the strong North Atlantic wind was blowing mist from the sea at us. Eventually, I just gave up on wiping it off. That little village is called Gásadalur, and has a swarming population of……..17. We drove through it (which took about 20 seconds), said hello (Halló) to half the population……. and went on our way.
